STUDENTS MAKE ART TO SAVE ART

DoSomething.org, HP, and AMD launch “Make Art. Save Art.” campaign, mobilizing students to advocate for art education by creating and sharing art online.

New York, NY (August 5, 2010)-DoSomething.org, HP, and AMD announce today a new campaign that mobilizes teens in the fight to keep art education in schools. The “Make Art. Save Art.” initiative encourages teens to showcase their artistic talents and passion for art education. Starting Aug. 2, artists can create PC wallpaper designs and submit them to MakeArtSaveArt.org along with a testimonial about why art education matters to them. Designs can feature photography, graphics, or any other visual art form. The key to advocacy is speaking out. Teens visiting www.MakeArtSaveArt.org are given the tools to share their favorite designs and advocacy messages with their social media networks and state representatives to encourage them to save art education. The top five most shared designs will win an HP dv6z Pavilion notebook with VISION technology from AMD. The Grand Prize winner will be selected from the most shared designs by a panel of expert and celebrity judges to receive a $5000 grant for his or her school art program and 5 HP dv6z Pavilion notebooks for the art room. Celebrities including Randy Jackson, Debby Ryan, Jabbawockeez, and Travie McCoy are also making their voices heard about the importance of art education. “It carries over into real life, you know, if you look at a piece of clay and you just see a ball of clay then that’s all you’re going to see in the world. But if you see kind of a situation and you realize that you can do something with it, and mold it and shape it, I think it all starts in the art room.” The Suite Life on Deck’s Debby Ryan said at the VH1 Do Something Awards. The eight-week campaign will run through Sept. 30. Artists can submit designs at any time during the campaign. “Sharing” will launch Sept. 1. “Art programs inspire creativity and provide an outlet for teens to express themselves,” said Arturo Lee, consumer marketing director for HP Personal Systems Group, Americas, “HP hopes that through this program we can motivate students as well as local and state representatives to take action to save school art programs.” Studies show that children who study music and the arts have higher grades, score better on standardized tests, have better attendance records and are more active in the community than other students.
