LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Staples (Nasdaq:SPLS - News) and DoSomething.org stuffed backpacks in style last night as celebrities, including the stars from ABC Family’s hit show Pretty Little Liars, along with Teen Choice Awards performer Jason Derulo, actress Olivia Munn and actor Nolan Gould joined teen volunteers to fill hundreds of backpacks with school supplies for students in Los Angeles. Singer/songwriter JoJo performed at the event. The Staples for Students celebrity school supply event at the Globe Theater at Universal followed yesterday’s Teen Choice Awards and shined the spotlight on the season-long campaign that gets school supplies in the hands of students.
“I can’t think of a better way for Young Hollywood to come together and rally fellow teens to support the Staples for Students campaign which is so important to us all,” said Shay Mitchell of Pretty Little Liars.
As part of this fourth annual campaign, Staples will also provide 4,500 backpacks filled with supplies totaling more than $125,000 to Boys & Girls Club members in communities affected by this year’s devastating tornadoes, including Tuscaloosa, Ala.; Joplin, Mo. and Springfield, Mass. so children in those hard-hit areas can go back to school with the supplies they need to succeed and achieve great futures.
“These young Hollywood stars exemplify the spirit of our Staples for Students campaign, which we hope inspires teens all over the country to do something,” said Christine Mallon, vice-president of retail marketing at Staples. “Staples stores will continue to collect school supplies through mid-September to benefit students in need around the country, and we encourage our customers and the community to get involved.”

The stars of Pretty Little Liars --Lucy Hale, Troian Bellisario, Ashley Benson and Shay Mitchell -- teamed up with DoSomething.org and Staples to encourage young people to make a difference this summer by collecting school supplies that benefit local students. The actresses are starring in this year’s DoSomething.org public service announcement (PSA) airing on television and radio stations nationwide, generating excitement online through www.staplesforstudents.org, and appearing in signs at Staples stores.
There is still plenty of time for parents and teens to get involved in this year’s program by visiting any Staples store from now until September 17 to drop off new school supplies or make a donation at the register with 100 percent of the proceeds benefiting local students. Teens can also visit www.staplesforstudents.org to get further involved in the following ways:
Request an Action Kit: Students can get tips, resources, and flyers on running their own school supply drives in their neighborhoods.
Text SUPPLIES to 38383: Students will receive more information on how to begin their own school supply drive or find their nearest Staples drop-off location (standard text messaging rates apply).
Pick Your Pretty Little Liar: When teens log-on and select their favorite star from the campaign, $1 will be donated by Staples to the cause and in turn, teens will get exclusive behind-the-scenes details from the actresses.
Check in on Foursquare: Teens who check-in at any Staples store on Foursquare will also have a $1 donated on their behalf by Staples to the campaign.
Since 2008, Staples and DoSomething.org have helped to raise nearly $2 million and have donated hundreds of thousands in school supplies for students throughout the country. Past celebrity supporters include singers Jordin Sparks, Ciara and Twilight star Nikki Reed.
