The Communications position will oversee all external communications on behalf of Do Something and its staff.

We are an organization that does an incredible amount of work with a fantastic staff: we deserve more buzz. We’re looking for someone who can pitch our cute biz dev guy as “man about town” profile as well as make sure we’re nabbing stories on our grant winners in their hometown papers. Whenever an article on “service” or the “Obama Generation” is published, we should be in it. And when we cut a PSA with Taylor Swift, Access Hollywood is there to cover it.

It’s not just quantity of buzz, but the quality that matters to us. Are the materials on brand? Are the sound bites appropriate? Are we working with the right talent?

Responsibilities:

  • PR strategy. Managing timeline, pitches, angles, and voice of Do Something.
  • Execution: drafting releases and pitches, sourcing material, prepping interview subjects, handholding journalists.
  • Securing recognition: finding lists, awards, and other forms of external approval.
  • Celebrity wrangling: interaction and management, including the creation of a long-term plan. This includes primary responsibility for creation of monthly campaigns.
  • Managing outside pr firms in their execution of major campaigns.
  • Idea creation: assisting in pitch formation, helping with event buzz, etc.
  • Web 2.0 Strategy: monitoring blog posts, working with the content team to make sure there is a clear strategy and voice that is on-brand.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Seriously self-driven and determined to reach goals. You are ambitious. You don’t settle.
  • Outgoing and enthusiastic personality. People like you, really like you. (You should “get” that celebrity allusion.)
  • Extremely well organized multi-tasker—without stressing out. A cool-head in hot moments is a particularly important characteristic for handling red carpets and event management.
  • Excellent communication skills: ability to convey message clearly, solid command of rules of grammar, appropriate sense of horror at mis-spellings…and, you’re funny.
  • Comfortable working with very important people—you don’t get intimidated. You know when to talk and when to listen.
  • Passion for what we do, concern for the world, commitment to social change.
  • Minimum 2 years experience in public relations and a sincere interest in developing a career in this space. You’ve got the start of a rolodex and you’re hungry to build it. You want homeruns as much as we do.
  • Ability to be a self-starter with creative initiative, but a healthy respect for deadlines, responsibility, working in teams, and taking direction.
  • College degree or equivalent.

How to apply:

Do Something is an equal opportunity employer. (Although we reserve the right to discriminate against people who wear white socks with dark shoes…)

Position Available: Clubs Associate

Do Something believes teenagers have the power to make a difference. We leverage communications technologies to enable teens to convert their ideas and energy into positive action. We inspire, empower and celebrate a generation of doers: teenagers who recognize the need to do something, believe in their ability to get it done, and then take action.

Responsibilities:

Clubs Program: Do Something's youth-led clubs program empowers teens to take action on causes they care about in high schools and communities nationwide.

  • Manage Clubs program operations. Coordinate all communications with clubs via website, eblast, mailings and direct phone/e-mail contact.
  • Manage Clubs program growth. Our short-term goal is to grow the Clubs program to 1,500 schools by January 1.
  • Identify marketing opportunities for the program and sustain short and long term growth.
  • Think big. What new campaigns should we be running with the clubs? How can we get them to be more effective in their communities?

Youth Advisory Council (YAC): The YAC is made up of 30 diverse and passionate teens from across the country. We count on them to keep our programs, events, partnerships and communications relevant.

  • Manage the YAC. Plan their annual visit to New York City and stay in touch all year through monthly conference calls and e-mail requests for feedback.
  • Prioritize their feedback and present it to staff to ensure integration of the teen opinion into Do Something's program development.

Not for Profit Partnerships: Do Something values our ability to collaborate effectively.

  • Identify, establish and maintain partnerships with not-for-profit organizations.

  • Stay in touch with the sector and make sure they're in touch with what Do Something is up to.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Extremely well organized multi-tasker—without stressing out. Do Something is super fun and fast-paced, and that means you need to be able to react and execute quickly.
  • Knowledge of HTML and Excel a plus, but we’ll also train you if you are willing to learn.
  • Good communication skills: a good email or memo can go a long way.
  • Ability to be a self-starter, but a healthy respect for deadlines, responsibility, and taking direction.
  • Passion for what we do, concern for the world, commitment to social change.
  • Knowledge of pop culture and teen trends of the moment a plus.
  • College degree or equivalent.

  • E-mail cover letter and one page resume to afinger@dosomething.org with the words CLUBS ASSOCIATE as the subject
  • Please include a list of the top 5 ways that Do Something Clubs should be promoting themselves at their school and garnering new recruits (and write it as if a teen was going to read it)
  • Also include a list of 11 ways that teens can take action to change the world without money, a car, or an adult.
  • Send names and telephone numbers of two references
  • No phone calls please. If interested, Do Something will contact you to schedule an interview.

Compensation:

  • $36k. period. 3 weeks vacation plus the week between Christmas and New Years, offices on Union Square, fun small office environment, and occasional brownie bake-offs. Plus, you don’t have to come to work on your birthday, but we’ll probably bake you cookies if you do.
