Action Tips: An Eco-Friendly Father's Day

Show your Dad you're thoughtful on a few levels this Father's Day. It's creeping up, and with just a few days to go, our simple and green ideas will show some love to your Dad and your Earth next Sunday!

Do Something’s Shopping Mall has tons of options on the eco-friendly items listed below (and 5% of the proceeds benefits Do Something!).

  1. Take a hike. Hit the trails in your area for a little outdoor fun, and some QT with Dad. You probably don’t do it as often as you could, so do some online research about where you can go in your area. Is there a cool river or creak? Check that out. Pack a picnic and make a day of it.
  2. Rock out. Get Dad a gift certificate to his fave online music store, like iTunes. Need to bring him into this millennium by showing him how it’s done? Gift him a playlist or help him make one including his favorite artists.
  3. Solar charger. Super charge his green efforts by giving a solar-powered charger that he can plug his phone, music player, and endless gizmos into when he’s on the go or at home.
  4. Hit the pavement. Most towns and cities host Father’s Day Run / Walks to benefit certain causes that affect dear ‘ol Dad, like prostate cancer and other men’s diseases. Look up a race in your area and run it with or in support of your Dad.
  5. Plant a tree with or for your Dad. The Arbor Day foundation is a great place to start, and they’ll help you plant a tree in your area.
  6. Green up his gym routine. Is your Dad a fitness buff? Buy him an eco-friendly water bottle for him to carry along when he hits the gym or to re-hydrate after a run.
  7. Is your pops the golfing type? Well you can make his Sunday routine a little greener by equipping him with 100% recycled, recyclable non-toxic golf bags and teas. Even cooler? Get him some Eco Golf Balls, so when Dad hits that chip shot into the lake, they will dissolve within 96 hours so he doesn’t have artificial plastic evidence of his bogies for years to come.
  8. Fire up the grill. Is Dad your resident cook or grill-master? Give him the day off. Tell him to put his feet up and plan the menu for thenight. Make sure it’s green. Buy local and organic products to save on transportation, energy and packaging. Or, challenge yourself to make a scrumptious meal using only what you have at home. Is Dad a breakfast man? Perfect! Make him breakfast in bed.
  9. Love him to a T. Buy Dad an t-shirt made from organic cotton, grown without pesticides. He’ll be fashionable and eco-fabulous.
  10. Does Dad need a style update? Get him a hip and helpful pair of Tom’s Shoes. Make sure he knows that he’s giving back by wearing them. For every pair bought, a pair of shoes is given to a child in need. Pretty awesome, huh?
  11. Rent bikes and hit your town for a day. A cheap and green way to get a new perspective on your hometown.
