Attire for guys has always been green—they usually rent a tux that was worn hundreds of times before (eww).

Girls, on the other had, spend an average of $500 on threads for the dance (that includes the dress, shoes, etc.). And don't kid yourself; you’re never going to wear it again. Try these alternatives to make your dress preparation a little more eco-friendly:

  • Donate it. Consider running a dress collection drive at your school so another girl somewhere can have a great dress. Contact the DonateMyDress.org to find out where to send your collections.
  • Swap with others. Don't condemn a one-time-worn dress to the back of your closet. Lend it to a friend. You can save money, while looking great.
  • Go green. Make your dress using eco-friendly fabric. If sewing isn’t your thing, you can still purchase a dress made with green materials.
  • Try vintage. This pretty much guarantees that nobody else will be wearing the same outfit, and vintage stores also have rare hair accessories, shoes and evening bags.
