Celebrate the eight nights of Hanukkah when you make this nine-branched candelabrum yourself.

  1. Wash two large potatoes. Place them somewhere to dry for a few hours.
  2. With the candles you will use on Hanukkah (eco-friendly please), stab nine evenly-spaced holes across the two potatoes, leaving a little bit of room between each hole so that the candles won't touch (You may have to add a third potato).
  3. Empty the holes with a knife. Make sure you make the holes slightly larger and that the far right hole is not as deep as the others (this hole is for the Shamash candle).
  4. Use a paper towel to dry the holes.
  5. Now you can decorate your menorah. Use markers or stickers in your design.
  6. If you can, coat the potato and holes with:
  • clear nail polish
  • rubber cement
  • spray paint
  • any sealant
  • Let the menorah dry overnight.
  • When you are lighting the menorah, drop spare hot wax from an extra candle into the holes and set the candles to be lit into the holes while the wax is still soft. You could also use glue, clay, or gum.
  • Place your potato menorah in the fridge once you are done and in between uses.
