Why Should You Report Animal Cruelty?
The ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement Department finds out about most instances of animal abuse through phone calls from concerned citizens who witness cruelty in their neighborhoods. If you don’t report crimes, the animals will continue to be harmed. Remember, anonymous reports are investigated with just as much attention, so don't be afraid to voice a concern without giving your name.
How You Can Report Animal Cruelty
- In New York City, contact the ASPCA at enforcement@aspca.org or (212) 876-7700, ext. 4450.
- In New Jersey, contact the NJSPCA at (800) 582-5979
- Outside the NYC Area
- You will need to find out the name of the persons in your area who are responsible for investigating and enforcing the anti-cruelty codes in your town, county and/or state. These people typically work for your local humane organization, animal control agency, taxpayer-funded animal shelter or police precinct.
- To find out what agencies are authorized to investigate and arrest instances of animal cruelty in your state (i.e, does the enforcement of animal cruelty laws fall under the authority of the police department or animal control officers?), visit ASPCA’s state-by-state list of state anti-cruelty investigatory-arrest powers.
- If you run into trouble finding the correct agency to contact, you may wish to call or visit your local police department and ask for their help in enforcing the law. Similarly, you can ask at your local shelter or animal control agency for help. To find contact information for your local shelter, check the yellow pages or visit the ASPCA’s searchable database of nearly 5,000 community SPCAs, humane societies and animal control organizations.
Tips for Reporting Animal Cruelty
- Write down what you observed, give dates and times when possible.
- Take pictures of the animals in question, but do not put yourself in danger.
- Do not enter someone’s property without their permission.
- If you can, provide the names and contact information of other people who have firsthand information about the abusive situation.

i realy hate seeing animals that are being abused all over the world and people just stand there and watch. What has our society become why are people letting these people abuse these animls? WHY ARNT WE DOING ANYTHING ABOUT IT?
ive read how people can hurt animals. its not rite. in one article this guy tied his dog to a chain and flung it around and then slpaed it down to the ground. i dont understand why people can do this to animals. i am an animal lover and always will.

It's sad cuz the animals didn't even do anything!!! They have to depend on humans to help them but people just abuse them. :(
If you all haven't yet, please watch the PETA Save the Seals video. It is very graphic, so don't watch it if you're easily discomforted. It's heartbreaking that the Canadian government allows industries to go ahead and beat seals to death just so they can take their skin. They even kill baby seals cold-heartedly. This is not acceptable and I don't understand what kinds of human beings have the heart to do this to cute, defenseless animals that just want to live comfortably with their families--just like us. We may be the most intelligent species on the world, but that doesn't give us the right to harm God's other creations, especially for something as stupid as clothes. I will never wear animal skins and I will always report animal abuse if I ever do witness it.
I can't believe people can be so cruel. I watch animal cops on animal planet NON STOP! I wanna be an animal cop when I grow up. Animals need people like us (animal lovers) to speak up for them, and I think all of us should try.

Their is some people up the street from me who have like 18 horses on 5 ackers of land... i have called the cops on them 2 times already and they wont do anything about it... they also have like 50 + dogs and all there animals have mange even the horses but the horses dont have any meet on them at all u can see every single one of their bones and the place is trashed the people had an old house that they had torn down and there are metel peices all over the yard... i am so tierd of seeing them like that n now one doing something about it...
I think that the cruliest thing someone can do is abuse an animal!! And I think that the person who abuses an animal should be punished the exact same way!!

I've started a club for stopping animal creulty beacause animals deserve respect, my dog is treated like one of the family. I would never abuse her, she has that special place in my heart. She's the cutest thing, a yellow lab,still not the most "obedient" dog, but she's getting there. She follows me everywhere, I love her, and she gets the respect she deserves. Animals feel pain, both physically and mentally, just like us. They remember everything and if those memories about you are one full of happiness and joy, you pet will love you, if it's the opposite, your pet will ignore you or fear you, (thats no fun) you want your pet to love you, they want companionship just like we do. So if your one of those people who abuse their pets to "train" them, there's better ways to train an animal, my dog learns by treats, is she does good, she gets a treat, if she does something bad, she doesn't get one. Animals deserve better end of story. Thank You.
I hate when people abuse animals because they are so defenseless against us. An animal trust you to love and take care of them not beat them or strave them. I currently volunteer at Pet Rescue by Judy and some of the animals they get make me so sad. Animal abusers should be punished the same as any other kind of abuser out there.
