Action Tips: Make Your Home Greener

Make your house green! Don't whip out the buckets of green paint just yet...we have a better idea.

We all know a few things to do to conserve energy at home, but with a little more effort we can really conserve. Here are some easy (and not so easy) ways that you can conserve energy at home… Energy is wasted, and electric bills go up, usually because of one or more inefficient home components (windows, heating and cooling systems, and ducts insulation) or a failure to pay attention to product use directions. A good start is to look at these first for easy fixes, in addition to the following tips.

Air Circulation

  • Keep the cold air out. If you already have energy efficient windows (ask your parents if you do), great! If not, increase window energy efficiency by hanging insulating curtains or drapes. Also, you can place a towel along the window ledge in order to keep cold air out.
  • Keep doors and windows closed when using heating or cooling units.
  • Don’t blast the AC or heat. Keep it reasonable. In the summer, try and keep the air conditioning around 78°F when you’re there, 70°F for heating. Each degree of heating or cooling can cost an additional four to five percent in energy costs! Your parents will be very happy if you can cut their heating bill!
  • Clean and replace filters. Any appliances that have filters use more energy if their filters are clogged. Get someone who knows what they're doing to check appliances, including heating and cooling systems. Even check your hair dryer!
  • Give your air conditioner a break (or at least turn it down). By creating shade, you can save up to 8% of your cooling costs. Use shades, awnings, or sun screens to shade your home and windows. Even a tree or plant can do the trick.

Lighting

  • Brighten your room with better bulbs. Replace existing incandescent lamps with compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs). These lamps can save three-quarters of the electricity used by incandescents. Don't like the color of CFLs? Buy a paper lamp shade and paint the inside pink with nonflammable pink paint (it will make for softer light)
  • Use dimmer switches, timers, or motion sensors on incandescent lights if you have them.

Appliances

  • Shop for 'greener' appliances. If you or your parents are in the market for new appliances (such as a new washer or refrigerator), ask them to purchase “ENERGY STAR” products. They’re really efficient and do a great job of saving energy.
  • Is your fridge running too hard? Fresh foods keep at 37 to 42°F, frozen foods at 0 to 5°F. Adjust the temp so it’s not too low.
  • Put your computer on "hibernate" mode. This way, every 30 min that you're away from the computer, it turns off, but not to the point where you have to restart everything once again. Easy. Simple. Energy efficient.
  • Fill the washer or dryer when doing your laundry. Don’t waste energy and water by only washing two pairs of socks when the machine could wash a lot more! Plus, you won't have to do laundry as often, and that's a good thing.
  • Clean the dryer lint trap after each use. It's better for your clothes anyways.
  • Cold-wash: Wash your clothes with cold water. It's easier on the fabric and 85% of the washing machine's energy goes into heating the water anyways
  • Line-dry:Use a clothesline outside or a drying rack inside to air dry your clothes instead of using the dryer.
  • Dishwasher: Wash only full loads. Use the energy saver, air dry cycle, or if possible, open the door and let dishes dry naturally.
  • Oven: Don’t preheat your oven. Cook complete meals of several dishes simultaneously in the oven. Use your microwave oven when possible.
  • Use the smallest pan necessary when you cook. Smaller pans require less energy.
  • Reduce cooking time by defrosting frozen foods in the refrigerator before cooking. The night before you want to cook something, throw it in the fridge and it'll be ready to go when you are.
  • Avoid excessive peeking into the oven. We know you're super excited about your batch of brownies, but each time the door is opened, a significant amount of heat escapes.
  • In winter, open window coverings on sunny days to help warm the rooms. In summer, close them to help keep the room cool during the day.
  • Close the damper when not using your fireplace. Turn your heating system down when using your fireplace to prevent heated air from escaping outdoors.
  • Keep the fridge closed! We know the feeling of wanting something to munch on, opening the door to the fridge and staring off into space mumbling "There's nothing to eat", but that must stop! Opening the door wastes a lot of energy and is costly.

Water

  • Speed-shower: The average eight-minute shower uses 20 gallons of water. Over a year your eight-minute shower water could wash 4,152 loads of laundry. How about a 3-minute one?
  • Water heater: Ask your parents to lower the water heater temperature.
  • Shower-head:Install a low-flow shower head to save money and water
  • Dishwasher: Wash only full loads. Use the energy saver, air dry cycle, or if possible, open the door and let dishes dry naturally.
  • Turn off the faucet while you're brushing your teeth!
  • Dishwasher: Wash only full loads. Use the energy saver, air dry cycle, or if possible, open the door and let dishes dry naturally.
  • Washing machine:Yup, same goes for washing clothes, wash only full loads.
  • Still drinking bottled water at home? Purify your tap water with a water filter and lose the plastic.

:) this is stuff i do/did

Our home is rural SC. We own 2 horses, 4 dogs, ferret, chickens, and all the wildlife that thinks of our property as theirs. Well it is truly theirs any way. We justown it in name. We do not cut down very many trees that come up in our yard. They keep us cool here in the south in the summer. They along with native plants supply food and shelter for wildlife. Our horses are now to old to be riden so they are retired. Hint this is where our fertilizer comes in. We live 8 miles 1 way from any stores. No problem though my dad has to travel 40 miles 1 way to work passing stores. Call and have him stop to pick up what you need. You don't need the computer, tv, game system, etc going at the same time.

This is all super easy to do but I don't get why most people can't seem to understand it!

why do people not understand these things? I do these things every day!! Its crazy how people dont understand that if you are killing the Earth you are killing YOURSELF and the generations after you!

EVERYBODY SHOULD DO THIS - IT IS SO GOOD FOR THE EARTH, THE ANIMALS THAT LIVE HERE AND, WELL, THE GENERATIONS TO COME!

I think this is a very simple and positive way to help out! You would be surprised how much this helps!

Everybody says that they're gonna act now, but what are they doing? They're sitten on thier couches getting fat and lazy(no offense to people who already are)and watchen TV. People just dont understand that our desicions now will affect our future. Even though Im thirteen, I understand how important this is. We only have one life to live, so why not make it a good life.

i already have been doing this for the longest time! I really hope a lot of other people are doing this as well! Go Green!!

This really work
another thing is if you wash your clothes in cold water rather than warm water it really helps lower those bills and save energy !

I do most of this already. What I don't do I'm GOING to do.

those are perfect ideas to make your house more green
=D

i already do most of these, but there's always room for improvement

i ReALLy WanNa folLoW ThIs AT hOmE

I will definetely try and talk my faily into trying these easy ideas to make our home greener. I'm even gonna tell other people to try at least a couple of these ideas. I think they are simple but can make a huge difference. I agree with ya GForester I'm also thirteen but I don't want the adults in this life to leave us with this mess so I want to get into good habits and hopefully inspire my friends and family to follow these. ;)

I agree, its really easy and do not cost a lot.

when showering and washing your hands you can:
-turn off water between rinses
-keep water flowing lightly(not blasting)
-use cooler water(not cold but cold/warm, plus; hot water/too much water dries out your skin)
-dont use a ton of soap(use only what you need)

I do almost everything!
for shower I am gonna buy a bucket!1 bucket= 4 liters water!
then the only thing that I have to do is start recycling+composting in my house!

i wrote a few chapters on this in 5th grade and iv been doing them since aspechialy the brushing the teeth thing =D
