How To: Hold a Dog Wash to Benefit Your Local Shelter
- Find a shelter. Search for one near you.
- Spread the word. Create posters and flyers – make these colorful and attention-grabbing but be sure to include all the details: which shelter the benefit is for, date, time, place, cost, etc. 2-4 weeks before the dog wash, hang them in your school and around town to advertise your event! Try a fun slogan, like "Polish your pet’s paws for a really good cause!"
- Gather your supplies. You’ll need: dog shampoo and access to a hose, two plastic bins (one small, one large) to can serve as your makeshift tubs, washcloths, combs, towels, and sponges. You can even check with your local pet supply store to find out if you can get these items donated.
- Break it up. Create stations that are clearly labeled and have a friend or family member man each station. You might want a shampoo/washing station, a rinsing station, a drying station, and a brushing station. Don’t forget to add a doggy donation station at the end where customers can donate some extra $$ to the shelter.
- Promote the shelter. Hand out fliers about the shelter you are donating proceeds to. Included on the flier should be details about all their programs, volunteering there, and pics of cute animals who need homes, of course. You should also provide different options for donating to the shelter—who to make checks out to and what they need besides money.
