Start by searching Petfinder (or Pets911), enter you zip code to find where there are homeless pets near you. You will be able to see where local shelters are by seeing where there are pets that are up for adoption. Get the phone number of the shelter and find out who works there.

This was the best choice I have ever made. I started volunteering with the Dearborn Animal Shelter in 2003 and wouldnt trade it for the world. I donated over 2,500 hours to this organization and have won many national and local awards for my work.
