Description

WorldTeach volunteers in Costa Rica teach English at public secondary schools under the auspices of the Ministry of Education. Teaching placements are in small towns in rural areas throughout the country. The schools are part of the Telesecundaria program, which constructs schools in rural areas where few if any teachers are available. Students learn English mostly via videos during the school year, and WorldTeach summer volunteers provide a "real life" experience for the students. Most volunteers will work with 7th through 9th grade students, though the students may range widely in age.

In addition to teaching, volunteers are required to develop a community project in their host town. This may involve the school and its students, or members of the wider community. It may be an art, drama or music project, a sports event, or an environmental initiative.

Skills

The summer program is open to qualified individuals over the age of 18 (undergraduates included). You need not be a US citizen, but must speak fluent English. Prior teaching experience is helpful but not required. Flexibility and enthusiasm are pluses!
