The volunteer will impart basic teaching skills and strategies that encourage active student participation as opposed to learning by rote, which is standard practice in most Haitian schools.
HRF's schools seek to break with the traditional educational system in Haiti, where learning by rote and disciplinarian methods are the norm. The volunteer will help the HRF teachers establish classrooms where the children are protagonists, taking an active role in the learning process instead of memorizing what the teacher writes on the blackboard. HRF emphasizes practice over theory (in Haiti, students are often required to memorize mathematical theories, while they may never learn how to figure out a specific problem).
