Working with DGS staff or independently to organise and run the youth empowerment programmes and activities.
Deep Griha Society (DGS), a locally-based grassroots Indian NGO, is looking for enthusiastic and committed volunteers to join its team. The organization’s program of activity is focused on empowering the urban slum and rural communities of Pune. DGS is looking for experienced individuals to get involved in a number of different areas. This really is a fantastic opportunity for someone looking to shift their career to work for not-for-profits or young programmes, and gain valuable experience at the heart of a local, Indian run charity.
Project Background
As a step towards its mission, Deep Griha Society has established a youth activity and resource centre called DIYA in Ramtekdi, one of the three urban slum communities that DGS works in with the specific aim of empowering the youth of this community.
DIYA (Deep Griha’s Integrated Youth Activity & Resource Centre) aims to enable both holistic and skills development in urban youth as a means to empower them to take control of their lives and access a wider range of opportunities. Youth also profit from safe and productive recreation activities, which can increase their happiness and reduce engagement in harmful alternatives like criminal or gang behaviour or drug use. This centre encompasses a range of activities that benefit youth:
- Recreation facilities, including dance lessons, theatre, fine arts, and board games
- Skills development, including English, computers, and sewing
- Awareness sessions on topics including sex and sexuality, drug abuse, and family violence
- Counselling facilities
Job Description
• Assist the DGS staff and local resource personnel to organise activities revolving around the following topics:
- Drama
- Fine Arts
- Dance and Music
- Indoor games and tournaments
- Homework Club
- Library
- Entertainment (Organise film screenings, talk shows, etc.)
• Help with teaching subjects such as English and basic computer skills
• Come up with innovative and youth centric ideas to get youth involved
• Organise outings in collaboration with DGS staff
• Work with DGS staff to plan the weekly and monthly activities schedule
• Compile a monthly report with details of your activities such as names of students, number of students attending the classes, whether the youths are responding well to the classes and their strengths and weaknesses in order to chart the progress of the young people.
Minimum requirements and competencies
• Relevant work experience with youth groups and ideally a qualification in youth work.
• Being creative, self motivated and pro-active to find new ways to teach young people is a must.
• Experience in music or sport would be a bonus.
• Adaptable to work with youth of different ages and mixed abilities
• Responsible person with a high level of initiative as the youth will see you as a role model
• Good communication skills to work with both young people and DGS staff
• Desire to learn Marathi would be a bonus
Deep Griha is looking for a minimum commitment of 8 weeks from volunteers however 4 months or more would be ideal. DGS provides accommodation at a dedicated volunteer house for Rs.250 per night, inclusive of meals and transport.
