11 Awesome GLAAD Award Moments

DoSomething.org attended the 23rd annual GLAAD media awards that honors the media's fair and accurate representation of the LGBT community. Like all award shows, the room was filled with stars, laughter and of course entertainment.

  1. The Red Carpet. DoSomething.org got to chat with Johnny Weir (Olympic ice skater), Jay Mandel (America's Next Top Model), Carson Kressley (Queer Eye), and Megan Hilty and Phillip Spaeth (Smash).
  2. Special Recognition Award. Openly gay teen Katy Butler was presented with a Special Recognition award for starting a petition to change the 'R' rating of the upcoming documentary Bully to 'PG-13'.
  3. 400 Young Adults. Dakota Fanning introduced the 400 teens cheering on the balcony above. Two students spoke and thanked the audience for their generous donations and support.
  4. Pucker Up. Glee's Naya Rivera and Cory Monteith both auctioned off kisses. It started to get juicy when John Stamos bided on a kiss from Cory. John decided to join the fun and auction off a kiss himself to one lucky male audience member. The three raised $15,000. Those must have been some kisses!
  5. Dancing With The Stars Wins. Accepting the Reality TV Series Award was Carson Kressley. He dedicated the award to the first transgender participant, Chaz Bono.
  6. Vito Russo Award. Executive Producers of Smash Craig Zadan and Niel Meron received the Vito Russo.
  7. Growing Pains. Tracy Gold's Growing Pains cast member Kirk Cameron recently made anti-gay remarks. Tracy and Carson Kressely spoke about the comments and Carson got even by saying, "I don't like your hair!"
  8. John Stamos Jokes. John Stamos got even with Kirk as well. "It reminds me of the men who wished I was gay… but enough about Kirk Cameron." He even took a stab at himself. "Craig and Neil wrote my first gay role – Uncle Jesse from Full House."
  9. Born This Way Wins. Lady Gaga won the Outstanding Music Artist award for her album, Born this Way.
  10. TV Journalism Segment. Reporter Josh Elliott accepted the award for the "Battle Against Bullying" segment from ABC World News with Diane Sawyer. Josh Elliott told the audience to never forget the subject of the segment, Jamey Rodemeyer.
  11. Zach's Speech. Zach spoke during a public forum on House Joint Resolution 6 in the Iowa House of Representatives about his lesbian mothers. The video went viral and Zack shared his personal story with the audience.
