How Will took a stand… by sitting down

Back in November, Arkansas native and 10-year-old Will Phillips made headlines when he refused to stand up for the pledge of allegiance in school. His reason? He didn’t want to pledge allegiance to a country where discrimination against the gay community still exists, and where “liberty and justice” does not “exist for all.”
On Saturday, CGG caught up with Will on the red carpet at the 21st Annual GLAAD Media Awards in New York City. The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) works to promote and ensure fair treatment and representation of people in the media, regardless of their gender identity and sexual orientation.
When we asked him what advice he had for his peers to make a difference in the community, he told us, “If you want to stand up—if you see something that’s wrong, say that it’s wrong. Work to your best efforts to try to prevent it.” So eloquent at only 10 years old! During the ceremony, the elementary school student was called to the stage to receive the award for Outstanding TV Journalism Segment. “Why Will Won’t Pledge Allegiance” was a piece featured on CNN's American Morning. Congratulations, Will!
Find out how you can join Will today and take action to support the LGBTQ community!

Quote of the day: Jessica Simpson

via CNN
“The beauty of a woman is her heart, and we got to sit with so many incredible, incredible women, with just these hearts that just radiated with strength and courage… and it’s really just about who you are inside, and I know we hear that all the time—“beauty comes from within”… it does!”
Jessica Simpson shared some of her experiences with CNN from her new show, The Price of Beauty, and how she triumphed over her own insecurities and the public’s fixation on her image.
The Price of Beauty is a look at Jessica’s worldwide beauty tour. Along with her best friends CaCee Cobbs and hairstylist-to-the-stars Ken Paves, she embarks on a journey around the globe to discover how different cultures define beauty, and the extraordinary lengths that women will go to in order to achieve it. The show premieres tonight at 10/9c on VH1. Let us know what you think!

Shaq wants you to do something big!

via fannation.com
When he’s not fighting to win on the courts, Shaquille O’Neal is fighting to save lives. The 4-time NBA champ has teamed up with Be The Match in its “Do Something Big” campaign to raise awareness about the bone marrow registry and encourage fans to become donors.
“There’s nothing bigger than life – not when someone you love is fighting to live,” Shaq urges. Be The Match registry helps match donors with patients suffering from leukemia and other serious diseases who are in need of bone marrow transplants. 70% of patients can’t find a matching donor within their families, and must rely on the generosity of donors. Donors of all races, especially African Americans, are needed, because matches are made more easily between people who share the same ethnicity.
Shaq filmed several PSAs to help spread Be The Match’s message. Check out one of them below, and find out how you can join other donors around the country to give hope to a patient in need. Do something big today!

Iman: refugee turned activist

Iman may be known for gracing the covers of countless magazines and working the catwalk as an international supermodel, but she is much more than just that. Originally from Somalia, Iman and her family fled their home country when revolution broke out in 1969, becoming refugees in Kenya.
On International Women's Day, Iman spoke out about the experience and told Enough Project founder John Prendergast, “…we left, my parents left with one picture of each of us. One picture. We left our families. We left our friends. We left our heritage, culture. So I've always tried to really make people understand what refugees are, you know? Because I am one."
As part of her charity initiatives, Iman is a global Ambassador for Keep a Child Alive, working to raise funds to help African families suffering with HIV/AIDS. She is also an avid supporter of the Enough Project’s “Raise Hope for Congo” campaign, helping to spread awareness about how “conflict minerals” fuel the war in the Congo.
Check out the video to see the entire intimate interview with Iman on how her experience being a refugee affected her and pushed her to be an activist.
