Abi Ferrin: freedom fashion fighter
via pinkmemodallas.com
Designer stars, fierce fashionistas, and glossy mag editors have all been flocking Bryant Park these last couple days for New York Fashion Week. But not all shows have to be so haute. Dallas designer Abi Ferrin showed her new Spring 2009 “Primavera” collection in her own fabulous way yesterday. And you can be sure that this fashion show wasn’t your average catwalk spectacular. Ferrin’s line is all about “fashion with freedom and purpose.”
“What ever could we mean?” you may ask. Well, Ferrin actually works with women in Nepal and Cambodia to free them from their paralyzing sex trade industry. It works like this: Ferrin collaborates with an organization that provides skill sets to women in these countries to learn a new trade: whether it be crafting buttons, making clutches, etc. Then Ferrin becomes a vendor to these women by buying their products for her lines, which gives them empowerment and freedom from human trafficking.
That means every button and clutch in all of Ferrin’s collections actually come from women who are putting in the effort to make constructive changes in their lives; and Ferrin provides them with the tools to do it! On top of it all, Ferrin’s collections are all about empowering every day women as well by using bright colors and bold prints in her lines. And this season’s Spring 2009 collection was no exception.
Hot red and pink satin, electric orange and green chiffon, and splashes of vividly colorful prints were all seen in excess. Ferrin’s new line is definitely for the woman who owns her personal style and isn’t afraid to stand out in a crowd.
As if this wasn’t enough, all the materials used in Ferrin’s collections are only made from fair-trade factories; and recycled paper is used in every press kit, hang-tag, and program possible.
