Both John McCain and Barack Obama plan to put more U.S. troops in Afghanistan to further political safety, but United Nations ambassador Angelina Jolie says the country's people need more than just protecting.
Having last week traveled to Afghanistan to get a first-hand look at how the Afghan people are dealing with the current state of unrest resulting from the fall of the Taliban in 2001, Angelina reports that more than five million Afghan refugees have returned home. Problem is, they have no place to live, as their houses were destroyed during the war.
In addition, many Afghans have little shelter, food, and water. And the children are unable to go back to school because it's unsafe.
"When you ask them what they need, they just smile and say, 'Everything,'" an emotional Angelina told Extra TV . "When you ask them what kind of work they want to do, they say, 'Anything.'"
Angelina continued, "They have suffered so much, and yet the Afghan people have remained gracious and open."
Obama has said he wants to initiate a plan that calls for $1 billion more (for a total of $3 billion) to be earmarked for Afghanistan to fund non-military aid, i.e. reconstruction and projects to impact the lives of ordinary Afghans.
While we're on the subject, CGG urges you to get updated on both candidates' precise plans for foreign policy and the war .

I agree with Obama. We focus so much on military aid that we forget that the lack of food and shelter is just as responsible for Afghanistan's unrest as the bombings and violence.
i wish more attention was brought to this topic. i think we do focus so much on the war and what we want out of it that we forget the reprocussions for those in the actual warzone. mrsashtonkutcher, i think you got it right!
