Madonna , Jennifer Aniston, Gwyneth Paltrow, Demi Moore, Hilary Swank, and Eva Longoria are parting with their prized Ferregamos to provide relief aid for Italian earthquake victims.

On April 16, Italy was hit by a massive earthquake; according to BBC news, the disaster killed at least 90 people, ravaged 26 towns, and displaced nearly 30,000 from their homes. Student dorms, churches, and valuable historical monuments collapsed. Economic and social structures were thoroughly devastated in all areas affected by the quake.

The generous celebs have partnered with GlobalGiving’s Italy Earthquake Recovery and Relief Fund. Donations to the fund during the first phase of assistance went to providing food, clothing, and shelter to displaced victims. The second phase of donations will support the development of community gardens and the creation of an Earth Market in earthquake refugee camps. The Earth Market will house local vendors that sell quality, fair-trade goods. CGG applauds these environmentally-friendly initiatives; they will surely provide a solid base for future, sustainable development in Italy.

Do Something users, if you have a good idea for how to react to any emergency situation, (be it disaster preparedness, or even helping soldiers returning from active duty) you don’t have to part with your purses, just apply for a $500 Disaster Relief grant!
