Listen up CGG readers! Here is a fun and easy way you can take part in World Refugee Day. Ben Affleck’s short doc about refugees in the Congo called “Gimme Shelter” is being put to good use. The campaign even has its very own Facebook “cause” page and for each person to join it, Microsoft Corp will donate one dollar to the cause!
It looks like Angelina Jolie isn’t the only star doing good on World Refugee Day. The goal of Ben’s film is to eventually raise $23 million in 2009 to help pay for necessities like clean water and emergency humanitarian assistance kits for the people of the Congo. Ben's film is a useful tool for raising awareness about the 50 million uprooted people in the world.
Ben is also featured on the cover of “New Londoners”—a free newspaper co-funded by the UNHCR office. The newspaper highlights the positive contribution of refugees and asylum seekers. This year, UNHCR is utilizing social platforms more widely than ever before to spread awareness and encourage young people to support the agency and the people it helps.
You can follow them on Twitter—they will be updating from global events as well as posting videos and photos on YouTube and Flickr. UNHCR's MySpace and Facebook pages will receive regular updates as well so make sure to check out what other countries are doing to recognize and honor refugees and their human rights!
What are you doing for World Refugee Day? Check out Ben’s video above and tell us what you think! You can make your own documentary about an issue you care about. Apply for a Disaster Grant and get started! Comment below!
