Last month, Joel and Benji Madden spent a week in a village in the Central African Republic to promote UNICEF, where they were faced with one of the biggest cultural/survival shocks of their lives.
"They didn't know who we are other than we were there to help," UNICEF goodwill ambassador Joel Madden told In Touch.
While there, Joel identified the lack of clean water and wells as the main problem in the area (which causes the deaths of one in five kids under the age of 5), but after the village was attacked by rebels right after their leave, Joel realized that conflict resolution is also essential.
"It makes it hard to live healthy lives when when they are constantly having to flee," Joel said.
Joel adds that the week-long experience was enough the change his life forever, "I was probably the furthest I've been from home, geographically and culturally. It was one of those moments that you look at your life and think about who you are and what you're about. It was a good moment."
