Celebs who meant to do good

Ugh! Some of our fave celebs are getting scammed and we are in shock!

Numerous celebs have filed suit against Mary Fanaro and her charity organization Omnipeace. They are accused of withholding proceeds from the sale of a t-shirt from Millenium Promise, an organization dedicated to ending extreme poverty in Africa by 2025.

So basically the sales of this shirt were supposed to be donated and distributed to areas of Africa through Millennium Promise, but apparently Omnipeace never made the donation, and the proceeds are said to be around a half million dollars. WOW!

Courteney Cox, Eva Longoria, David BeckhamSheryl Crow and Jennifer Aniston are among the celebs that purchased the shirts believing that it went toward a good cause. We love these do-gooders, and we hate to see them mad! So what can we do to prevent this?

CGG asked DoSomething.org Development Director Jessica Scheer how to make sure our users don't have the same thing happen to them. Three key tips she gave us were:

  1. Check out the charity on Charity Navigator and GuideStar. They track all the U.S. based charities.
  2. Ask to see their Annual Report (a real annual report will include a financial report, board of directors, etc.)
  3. In their "about us" section, search for something that mentions that they have a "501c3" status. If you don't see it, email them and ask them to send you a letter that proves it.
