CGG recaps the greenest Fashion Week ever!

Sadly New York’s beloved Fashion Week has come to an end. Now it’s off to London, Milan, and Paris.

But first, it's time to recap CGG's favorite picks from the week, including the greenest, the most politically inspired...and more!

1. Liz McClean: At Bumble and Bumble studios, Designer Liz McClean went a bit drastic and mixed men’s and women’s stylings together. With menswear influence on the rise, she took it to another level. The theme behind her collection was soft palettes, like ivory and pink chiffon, mixed with leather vests and army fatigues; meeting just in the middle between badass and goody goody.

The perfect ending? Sending her last model out in a pure white chiffon gown, a leather motorcycle vest and a Barack Obama pin. Democratic much?

2. Ralph Lauren: After his collection, we should be calling him Lauren of Arabia. Sheaths of gold, bronze, and khaki draped the runway in what could best be described as Indiana Jones meets Aladdin. Turbans and fedoras topped the heads of gorgeous models draped in some truly beautiful pieces.

Loose fitting silk blouses, pants of all lengths, gold beading and lace highlighted the different shades of ivory and cream that were the simpler sides of Ralph’s Arabia. Crocodile, leather, and canvas belts and bags gave Aladdin his Indiana-esque appeal. All in all it dazzled with greatness.

3. Marc Jacobs! Surprise, Surprise—actually not at all; MJ veterans Victoria Beckham, Jennifer Lopez, Jay-Z, and Kanye West came out to celebrate the man. Marc wowed us for yet another season with his futuristic yet retrospective collection. Bright colors and bold patterns were shown in various ways. Think a truly American woman. There were turn-of-the-century prairie skirts, grunge leather jackets, and plaid shirts. It was definitely a nostalgic American feel with a twist. Looks like Mr. Jacobs might be missing good ol’ USA from his home-away-from-home across the pond in Paris.

4. Sabyasachi: Sabyasachi Mukherjee definitely turns to the arts to paint his collection. Frida Kahlo, Emile Node and Paul Gauguin helped inspire the Indian designer to create a potpourri of colors on her runway. The new collection revealed breezy sportswear pieces paired with those of a sexy librarian-esque touch. And check this out: Organic fabrics of all different textures and hues helped the separates blend into little works of art on the catwalk.

5. Untitled 11:11: Green is the new black! Organic cotton, Hemp silk shorts, vintage buttons, and other recycled fabrics helped adorn the runway to be both sustainable and stylish.

6. Project Runway: We all heard the J. Lo judge no-show drama, but the winner of PR's fifth season remains under wraps. But CGG will say this much: fifth-season designer Leanne Marshall totally made it work! Leanne was one of five contestants to show her line at the tents (two of them will be cut from the finale), and she was hands-down the crowd favorite. And get this: her sweet, sculptural line was made from recycled textiles, hemp, bamboo, and organic cotton. Bravo! Listen up, Heidi and Co.: Leanna Marshall should be crowned Project Runway’s first eco-friendly winner!

7. Trovata: Still more environmentally-minded fashion! Those crazy-adorable designers took their ideas on the road--cross-country to be exact--in preparation for their spring 2009 collection. The result: these self-proclaimed “surfers that just want to travel and be creative” took it to another level. They rewired a bus to run on vegetable oil and traveled to all the stores around the country that carried their brand to pay them a visit. That same bus became their check-in at their show, with “petrol…consider the alternative.” But the show wasn't Teva-sandals crunchy -- in fact, each model stepped in paint before hitting the catwalk to paint a colorful picture.

8. Be Eco Chic: Drumroll please for CGG’s favorite show of the week! Be Eco Chic was created as a showcase for luxurious eco fashion designs conceived by celebrated contemporary designers--Carmen Marc Valvo, Chado Ralph Rucci, Vena Cava, and Edun--to name a few. The event was a fast-paced multimedia spin on the current evolution of green fashion. Where else might you see a menagerie of designs crafted out of seaweed à la Linda Loudermilk, recycled crêpe de chine with found hardware by Vena Cava, and recycled raffia by Ralph Rucci?

Talk about biodiversity in today’s fashion! Highlights also included the very gorgeous Lauren Hutton sporting that fantastic gap-toothed smile, Patti Hansen in Nicole Miller, and supermodel Alek Wek with her new eco bag collection, wek1933. Another true goodie was Carmen Marc Valvo’s 100% silk chiffon evening dress printed with low impact dyes – crafted out of sustainable fabrics provided by CLASS showroom.

It's nice to see that fashion isn't all about fur, that designers are thinking about the effect that clothes have not only on a superficial level but also what's best for the planet.

I probably won't be buying any of this stuff, though, because it's gotta be crazy expensive. What's up with the Gap, Banana Republic, Forever 21 - are they going green too? I hope so!
