Christina Aguilera’s powerful singing voice is being put to good use. But she’s singing to a different tune—she is the new voice for world hunger as the spokesperson for World Hunger Relief. Her initiative follows Mariah Carey’s poster campaign for the cause last year. Now, Mariah has passed the reigns over to her fellow songbird.

She will be getting the word out about the hunger cause and stressing the urgency of this problem. “It’s unacceptable a child dies every six seconds somewhere around the world from hunger,” says Christina, “By lending my voice for World Hunger Relief, I hope to raise awareness about the issue and move people from hunger to hope.”

Christina echoes the name of the campaign: “From Hunger to Hope” sponsored by KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell. For those of you who caught the documentary “Supersize Me” or the more recent “Food Inc.” you may be wondering if fast food corporations should be funding this work. Some speculate as to how genuine the partnership actually is while others are convinced that any help for the cause is good.

Ending world poverty can look like an impossible task but there is so much you can do right in your own town! Hold a food collection drive and ask your friends and family to collect canned or other packaged, non-perishable food items. After the food drive, donate or present the collected food items to a local hunger relief agency in your community. Or go directly to the source and help prepare and serve meals at a local shelter or soup kitchen. Remember, hunger isn’t just something in third world countries—it exists here in the US.
