Daniel Radcliffe donates to stop suicide

Our favorite wizard, Harry Potter star Dan Radcliffe, is making magic in the do-gooder world with his recent donation to the Trevor Project.

This national organization focuses on preventing crises and suicides among lesbian, gay, bisexual, and questioning youth. Its programs include a 24-hour suicide and crisis prevention hotline, and “Dear Trevor”, an online forum where youth can ask questions and receive answers about sexual orientation, gender identity, and other areas of interest.

“I am very pleased to begin my support of The Trevor Project, which saves lives every day through its critical work… I deeply hope my support can raise the organization’s visibility so even more despondent youth become aware of The Trevor Helpline’s highly trained counselors and Trevor’s many other resources,” Radcliffe shared.

The actor also pointed out how upsetting it is that, according to 2009 statistics, suicide is a top killer of young people and that “LGTBTQ youth are four times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers.”

These statistics need to change. Help fight sexual orientation discrimination and other types of bullying in your community by shedding stereotypes, creating an awareness campaign, and valuing uniqueness.
