Ellen Degeneres, Pete Wentz mourn Prop 8

Celebs like Brad Pitt and Ellen DeGeneres celebrated the victory of President elect Barack Obama, but were heartbroken over the passage of Proposition 8 yesterday, which overturns California's legalization of gay marriage. Hollywood brought in numerous donations to fight its passage, from the likes of Steven Spielberg to T.R. Knight. (And check out Ellen's PSA above!) But in the end, it passed by a narrow margin.

Ellen said on her website that the fight for gay rights is not over. "When it was clear that Proposition 8 had passed in California, I can’t explain the feeling I had. I was saddened beyond belief. Here we just had a giant step towards equality and then on the very next day, we took a giant step away."

"I believe one day a 'ban on gay marriage' will sound totally ridiculous," she said. "In the meantime, I will continue to speak out for equality for all of us."

Other celebs spoke out on its passage, including Pete Wentz who says voters were tricked into voting for it. "Many people were intimidated on this issue due to the scary misleading communications on the other side," he said in a statement. "I believe that this is, and has always been, a civil rights issue. We should not allow inequality like this in America."

How did you feel when Proposition 8 was passed? Let us know!

i agree with pete wentz that it could have passed from misinformation. CA is a pretty liberal state, right? i think there's could have been a sense of intimidation almost for voters when tackling this controversial issue, but it TOTALLY should have been shot down. what were you thinking CA?!?!!

I was so shocked when I read proposition 8 had passed! I can't wait until, like Ellen said, "a ban on gay marriage will sound totally ridiculous." Until then, please please PLEASE don't lose hope!

I don't understand why a state has the authority to determine the marriage status of two people in love...hetero or otherwise!
