The star of the hit show “Bones,” Emily Deschanel, has had enough of this monkey business! The eco-friendly, animal loving actress is getting political and raising her voice for the chimps. She recently wrote a letter to California congressman Rep. Henry Waxman urging him to cosponsor the "Town-Reichart Great Ape Protection Act."
The legislation was introduced in a House health subcommittee that is part of the Waxman-chaired Committee on Energy and Commerce. Thanks to a law signed by President Clinton in 2000, some chimps are able to retire from being used in research to the Chimp Haven sanctuary, built in Shreveport, Louisiana. Emily wants to see this happen. The sanctuary opened in 2005 and currently houses more than 100 chimps.
Why a chimp sanctuary? Well, as Emily states in her plea, these furry creatures are used for scientific research that is often very invasive and painful. Large animals like dogs, cats, and primates are put in tiny wire cages. Living in cages can cause these creatures to be tremendously lonely and bored unless they have things to play with or ways to get more exercise.
Emily is a committed animal rights advocate who, like Paul McCartney, encourages people to think before they shop and eat. You can become more animal and eco-friendly by not purchasing products tested on animals. And you don’t have to be a celeb to write to your congressman—write a letter and help Emily pass this legislation!
Tell us what you think about Emily’s letter. Do you agree with her that animal testing is wrong and should be phased out? Or do you think it’s worth the benefits? Comment below!
