Yesterday, George Clooney got to meet with President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden to discuss his recent trip to the Darfurian refugee camps on the border of Darfur and Chad.
Clooney stood outside the White House afterwards to share his experience with Larry King (who was warm inside his studio in NYC). He tells Larry that his discussion was primarily about the important event taking place next week: the International Criminal Court will indict President Al-Bashir of Sudan for war crimes and crimes against humanity.
“We talked about this being an opportunity, perhaps, for not just United States but for all of us to work together with the international community in a real diplomatic effort to try and bring some sort of peace to this region.”
He also delivered 250,000 postcards to President Obama signed by people across Darfur to remind the administration that this issue needs to be dealt with. The postcards were collected from the Save Darfur organization and symbolized the need for open communication in the international community about this issue.
This was not the first time George Clooney worked with Barack Obama on this topic. Three years ago, when Obama was a senator, the two gave a press conference on the issues in Darfur. Clooney is extremely passionate about the Darfur cause and he believes that the United States can help in Darfur, not by giving money or troops but through diplomacy.
Despite the danger in the area and the extreme death tolls, Clooney says there is also “a tremendous amount of hope that these indictments and this new administration are going to help move the international community to a real peace.”
Though the United States is no longer a member of the ICC, Obama is expected to re-ratify though he has not done so yet. But Clooney reminds us that “it’s been 30 days!” It’s hard to remember that Obama and Biden have been in office for only a month when they have already accomplished so many things!
