George Clooney has “ein herz fuer kinder”! Yep, Clooney received the Golden Heart Award at the charity event “a heart for children” in Berlin. He is the founder, along with good friends Brad Pitt, Matt Damon and several other celebs, of Not On Our Watch (NOOW), a non-profit with an impressive mission statement and track record. NOOW directs global attention to mass atrocities and give voice to marginalized and displaced victims. Their main mission is to end the genocide in Darfur. They've also given a half a million dollars to Save the Children for emergency relief work in Myanmar in the wake of Cyclone Nargis.
Clooney said that while it's important for celebrities to accept awards to raise awareness about their issues, he feels undeserving. “You know, people are just too nice to me. If I had something to do with the end of the Sudan conflict then OK. But it’s not over, we haven’t been successful yet. That is why I want to hand over the ‘Golden Heart’ to people who risk their lives everyday,” Clooney told the German newspaper Bild.
Clooney has traveled to Darfur in Sudan, Chad and Goma in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where fighting, race hate, systematic violence towards women have reduced life to something mean and miserable. Clooney said in the interview, “The guilty feelings come after you have landed, that you have only briefly dipped your toe into the water – that you witnessed all this suffering with the constant knowledge that you can leave whenever you want.” His conscientiousness strikes the heart and his genuine efforts to save people impress the mind.
