Why has Hayden Panettiere defaced her Heroes promotion t-shirt? To save the whales! She changed the slogan Save the Cheerleader…Save the World to Save the Whales…Save the World! in support of the The Whaleman Foundation’s new campaign “Save the Wales Again!”

Hayden Panettiere may not have superpowers like the other characters on the hot TV show Hero but she is definitely changing the world off the screen. She traveled to Washington D.C. last Monday to rally against the continuation of commercial whaling.

The campaign is a reminder that the fight against whaling is not over. The Save the Whales movement has fizzled out of the limelight but don’t be fooled; companies continue to harpoon these wonderful creatures. In the last 20 years, since protection policies for the whales went into effect, over 25,000 whales have been killed.

But you better believe that this cause is back with a vengeance. They have PSA’s featuring Hayden, Pierce Brosnan, Alexandra Paul and others. Their mission is to “end all commercial and lethal scientific research whaling worldwide.” This time, they also want to bring new issues into the cause such as “toxic pollution, noise pollution, global warming, loss of habitat, entanglement in fishing nets, collisions with ships, and increasing whaling.”

And Hayden is not your typical celeb spokesperson. She got a chance to speak with representatives from Japan, Iceland, and Norway to challenge their archaic fishing practices.

You can follow Hayden’s example by writing or calling your US Representatives and Senators and let them know that you want the US to invoke the Pelly Amendment against Japan, Norway, and Iceland until they stop whaling.
