Music lovers were crushed when the Beastie Boys canceled their “All Points West” appearance but were somewhat better when they heard Jay-Z was set to replace them. The rapper didn’t just save the day at yesterday’s music fest in Jersey City; he dedicated his entire performance to the ill Adam Yauch of the absent band.
The Beastie Boys made two grim announcements just a week before the outdoor music festival. The video message posted on their website announced that Adam Yauch had cancer and that the band was going to have to cancel their tour dates for the upcoming months. Jay-Z’s rocking performance helped heal our wounds. He opened with the Beastie’s “No Sleep Till Brooklyn”—a tribute to Adam who is a Brooklyn native like Jay.
Jay gave us the best of both worlds when he opened his set with some Beastie classics! But he wasn’t the only one. Coldplay also paid tribute to Adam by closing the show with “(You Gotta) Fight For You Right (To Party).” And Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, who also performed at the festival on Friday, wore an armband that said "Get well MCA" during her group's set. Nice to know Adam has such good support from fellow musicians!
