Jerry Rice: a true legend

Jerry Rice, former NFL wide receiver, selected to the Pro Bowl 13 times, is called by some as the greatest NFL player of all time. As one of the honorees of the Sports Legends dinner, Rice told us how important it is to raise awareness about paralysis. It could happen to anyone. To see what else this 20-season NFL player is involved in, read below.

CGG: Why is it important for you to be here tonight?
Jerry Rice: To give back support. Also football is a very violent sport. There’s always that chance of spinal cord injury. And I think what Nick Buoniconti is doing and also his son – they’re bringing awareness. We’re hoping to raise over $6 million tonight. To do the research is around $22 million so we’re just going to continue working hard.

Ed. Note: The event raised $7 million!

CGG: Has paralysis affected your life in a personal way?
JR: No, no it hasn’t. I was one of the fortunate ones because when you step on that football field, and with the speed of the game now, anything can happen.

CGG: We hear that you’re involved in the United Negro College Fund. What have you done with them and are there any other causes you’re passionate about right now?
JR: The March of Dimes, the Big Boys, Big Sister – getting involved with those organizations, going there, showing support, giving back 100%. Football for me was great for so many years. This is an opportunity to show that you really care and you can give something back to your community or to an organization.

CGG: What advice do you have for young people looking to make it in professional sports?
JR: Just believe in yourself. Also you have to work hard. And I was hungry. I wanted it. I knew I was coming from a very small predominantly black school and I wanted to prove myself. You know, it might be that much that separates you from the next guy and you gotta be able to sacrifice and be willing to go out there and work your butt off. The first ten years I didn’t take a vacation. I wanted to be the best football player I could possibly be. So just work hard and believe in yourself.
