Jessica Alba’s style ethics

Jessica Alba Vogue

What environmentally friendly changes has Jessica Alba made in her life? She took a minute during her photo shoot for Vogue’s July issue to talk about “style ethics” and how the actress has gone eco-chic in her own life.

The steps to green queen success?? Jessica says one home improvement she has made is replacing the grass on her lawn with fake grass made from recycled tires so that they don’t have to waste water just to keep their lawn looking fresh. The American Water Works Association says that each household in America uses approximately 70 gallons of water a day! A staggering fact when 1.1 billion people worldwide do not have access to clean water.

She also proved that she’s not afraid to get a little dirty for the earth—she has her very own (non-smelly) composter. Jessica also shared some of her eco-friendly cleaning tips like using vinegar instead of chemical overloaded department store cleaners. Take a page out of Jessica’s book by starting a compost bin at your school!

Jessica says it is possible to be fashionable and environmentally friendly by buying organic materials like bamboo. She is living proof that green is the new pink. So why not create a brochure about local, organic boutiques for people at your school or in your community? Tell us what you think—comment below!

Great story and Jessica Alba should be commended for talking a positive stance on doing basic things to be more eco friendly.

A couple things though-

Artificial grass like the kind she has- it's been featured in a few magazines and on line, is not made of recycled tires. It is made of plastic and perhaps some nylon. That's a good thing- but just trying to be accurate.

Artificial turf like that used on sports fields is filled with ground up rubber tires and sand. However, calling this recycled is a little bit misleading in my opinion. The crumbs get pulverized, carried away, washed away, blown away, etc and need to be replenished as needed on a regular basis. No one tracks this or what happens to it.

In landscape applications, this is even more the case as dogs, pools, kids and blowers are involved- not to mention slopes and hoses.

The backyard design was a beautiful one- I only wish they would have contacted SYNLawn so they could obtain a synthetic landscape lawn that would not have been filled up with anything to go around the pool - especially a pool with minimal coping as the one shown in the magazines.

We have completed a long list of celebrity homes as well as over 6,000 homes and commercial installations in So Cal alone. SYNLawn did the WYNN hotel in Las Vegas and just did the Excalibur- part of over 20 major properties we have done in Vegas alone.

We even have products that have special yarns that contain technology called Heat Block.

Finally, the quote concerning water use is grossly underrepresented.

a 1,000 sq. ft. lawn in So Cal is using somewhere in the neighborhood of 50,000 gallons of water a year. As I understand- that lawn is perhaps 1,500 feet which means that Miss Alba might be saving as much as 75,000 gallons of water a year- enough to fill her pool 2 - 3 times. She deserves big props for that!

It's likely that her overall water use in the home has gone down by 20% to 60% depending on how much natural lawn remains and how many other plantings she has.

I just hope the pool isn't always filled with rubber crumbs and that they are not all over the house, etc.

Anyway, thanks for covering a great topic and cheers to Jessica Alba for being not just talented and beautiful, but smart and GREEN!
