Jon Stewart melts global warming myths

Tuesday night, Jon Stewart sat down with Energy Secretary Steven Chu to talk green on The Daily Show. After receiving a “Nerds of America Society” T-shirt from the Secretary, Jon got down to business and asked him about the climate bill that just passed in Congress--The American Clean Energy and Security Act aka the Waxman-Markey Bill. Jon couldn’t help but mock the members of Congress who believe global warming is a myth:

1) Because carbon occurs naturally, it can’t be harmful

2) The planet is not getting hotter, it’s getting colder

3) This is just a way for the electricity companies to make a lot of money

While 30,000 scientists have signed a petition agreeing with myth number two, Secretary Chu says that the majority of scientists cannot overlook the facts. He believes there is so much evidence that shows global warming is a reality and it is largely due to greenhouse gas emissions.

Even though Chu turned out not to be a green superhero (remember Greenzo from 30 Rock? If only...) like Jon had hoped, he was still impressed with Chu’s easy solutions every American can do to help the planet. The first is simply to paint your roof white! Having a white roof instead of a black roof will actually make your house cooler, meaning you will save money on air conditioning bills and shrink your carbon footprint!
