Joss Stone: Why this election is important to non-Americans too

via People
Joss Stone will not be voting in this election: Her flag is the Union Jack, not the Stars and Stripes.
Still, she's using her talent and music to contribute to the 2008 presidential election. Last night, Joss showcased her new single "Governmentalist," an anthem for the Do Something generation, during Headcounts' "Get Out the Vote" concert at NYC's Highline Ballroom. Before she took the stage, CGG emailed with the amazing singer . . .
CELEBSGONEGOOD: "Governmentalist" addresses the lack of medical care for Iraq war veterans. What do you hope to see happen for the soldiers and homebound vets after this election?
Joss Stone: I hope that they are given back the hospitals that were designated to them before. I hope that they are able to recuperate together, and that they get the information they should have in order to fight a war. I would say that many of the soldiers do not really know what they are fighting for and should be informed about the politics of a war they are
risking their lives to fight.
CGG: What is your message for first-time and young voters this Election Day?
JS: Be grateful you have a vote and use it! For years many of us did not have the right to vote. We should all use the voice we are given.
CGG: People are crossing party lines, and people from other countries, like yourself, are so passionate and vocal about this election. How is this one different?
JS: Because in the last eight years we have seen a lot of bloodshed, and no one wants to see this happen again. [This election] is important for the rest of the world, because the decisions America makes affects the rest of the world. We now live in a global community, which means that the actions of America affect the rest of the world. We should all be on the same page and work together. Every election is important!
CGG: Do celebrities/musicians have the power to influence voters?
JS: Some yes, some no. We have the power to spread the word to those who will listen to our music; however I'm not sure people will necessarily listen to a person just because they are famous/sing/act. Most people do not buy into just our music but our beliefs. If you have the power or means to spread the word or just highlight someone's plight, then you should speak up. The majority of this world does not really have a platform to speak as loud as myself or many other people in the public eye. Many of those people are probably more intelligent than me, though without an audience their voices are not heard. By speaking out and encouraging people to use their voices to vote, it is just me showing my appreciation for the gift I have been given.
Thanks for Doing Something, Joss -- your American fans appreciate it!

non-american citizens speaking up about the importance of voting makes me realize EVEN MORE it's importance. the president we chose isn't just going to be changing things here in the US, but he is going to have to deal with other nations and impact them as well. i wonder what the rest of the world thinks about obama.....
How amazing that our election has stars from other countries talking! Joss seems like one of the the great ones... hope she keeps using her voice for good!
So great to hear everyone is so passionate. Its also important to realize how this election was on an international scale and it should be becuase it impacts other countries so much.
Although I think its important to note the opposite, the way that Americans pay no attention to international elections, when they're so important here too.
Joss's actions are a true testament to the fact that you can ALWAYS Do Something about the issues that matter to you. She doesn't have a vote, but that didn't stop her from taking action to support the election. What an inspiration :) Also, love the hair. So fun!
I heart Joss Stone! Thanks for caring about the USA, girl! We love the UK too!
