Kathryn Bigelow's time has come

“Well, the time has come!” Those were the words of Barbra Streisand at last night’s awards ceremony when she announced director Kathryn Bigelow as the winner of the Best Director award for her work in The Hurt Locker, making Oscar history as the first female to win the honor. Plus, Bigelow’s big win came just in time for International Women’s Day!

The film, which is about a bomb disposal unit entrenched in the Iraq War, stole the spotlight, scooping up 6 awards total— including the Oscar for Best Picture. Bigelow accepted her award with a dedication “to the women and men in the military who risk their lives on a daily basis… may they come home safe.”
