Kelly's Fighting Back

The media is having a field day: another celebrity in rehab! But Kelly Osbourne is winning her battle against drugs and alcohol; she's confronting her addiction to painkillers and alcohol. Last week, the 24 year old daughter of a heavy metal legend responsibly checked herself into a rehab clinic. Her mother, Sharon Osbourne feels "proud that [Kelly] did it," and asserted that "the family is all standing behind her. Kelly knew that she needed help and she's getting it."

Kelly has been to treatment before and is very open about it. Of treatment, Kelly says, "Rehab teaches you the skills to change your life, but it's up to you to do so." Usually one must be forced or prodded into doing what's healthy for them. How many times have you insisted on going to the movies with your friends even when you have a bad cold and should probably be watching the inside of your eyelids (not Hotel for Dogs).

The pop star should be admired, not criticized for going into rehab, because it was her own, voluntary decision. This shows her immense strength and commitment to get over drug and alcohol addiction. The press can paint a pretty ugly picture of celebs dealing with addiction. Does anyone remember Amy Winehouse or Lindsay Lohan’s battle to not only overcome drug addiction but overcome heaps of bad press? CGG hopes Kelly won’t meet the same media battle; she needs to take care of herself.

Anyone struggling with an addiction should follow Kelly’s courageous example. If you have friends that are dealing with drug or alcohol problems, inform them that their addiction issues are not something to be ashamed of. Science has proven that addiction is a sickness, or a disease, and should be dealt with as such. Explain to them that rehab to drug addiction should be thought of as chemotherapy to a cancer. It is a long process, but hopefully the insight will help them help themselves.
