Lance Armstrong: still living strong

Break out your yellow “Live Strong” bands people--Lance Armstrong, the man who won the Tour de France seven years in a row, is currently competing for his 8th title! While sports critics see this as a bad career move, Lance says he is not doing it for himself or his legacy; he’s doing it to find a cure for cancer.

Last week he spoke out in a TV special on VERSUS called “Lance Armstrong: The Comeback Story.” He talked about his motivation to find a cure for cancer and to keep racing. He continues to raise money through his very own “Lance Armstrong Foundation” which aims to inspire and empower people with cancer through education, advocacy, public health and research programs.

Lance may not have won the race on Monday (he lost by less than a second!) but he is still happy with the results. His good friend--funny man Ben Stiller even came out to support him and got to test drive Lance’s bike! The two guys go way back (remember Lance’s cameo in Dodgeball?) and earlier this year Ben hosted a cancer charity event for the Armstrong Foundation.

Lance has survived testicular, brain, and lung cancer and has undergone tons of treatment from extensive chemotherapy and surgery. “It really is the main motivation to be back doing this. We’re at a point now where we felt that we could take this message and we can effect lives, we can effect change, and ultimately create more survivors around the world.” Live strong Lance!

Want to support Lance and the cancer cause? You can! National Livestrong Day is on October 2nd this year and you can go to the website to find ways you can get involved. But there are other ways you can help the fight cancer—the disease that causes more deaths every year than AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria combined. July is UV safety month people so lather up before you run off to the beach and spread the word!
