Madonna begs for Mercy, at home and abroad

Despite being labeled “a child kidnapper," Madonna is back in Malawi trying to adopt another child, this time a four-year-old girl named Mercy James.
Some local politicians and human rights workers accuse her of cheating the international adoption system and exploiting the third world nation. Just three years after the adoption of her son David Banda from the African nation, Madonna continues to battle with politics and the press to justify her actions overseas.
Days after her trial, Madonna’s charity “Raising Malawi” has announced an online auction starting April 2nd. The auction was just put together last minute and is said to coincide with the release of a book of photographs and testimonials from the documentary Madonna produced last year, “I Am Because We Are.”
“People always ask me why I chose Malawi and I tell them ‘I didn’t. It chose me,” says Madonna in the trailer of her 2008 documentary. Yet the public reaction to the film was largely negative. The press called it “We Are Because I Am,” spinning off the film's name to reflect Madonna’s own agenda in making the doc.
The disapproval is following her into 2009, only this time it is because of the coincidental timing of the fund raiser. Many believe Madonna is simply doing it to sway the jury’s decision over her adopting Mercy.
But what do you think? Is the media being too hard on her? Do you think the auction is meant to divert the criticism surrounding her adoption or is it a genuine attempt to give back? Check out the trailer for her doc and comment below!
