Paul McCartney isn’t asking you to go all out vegetarian—but he does want you to give up meat for one day of the week. Why? For his new “Meat Free Monday” campaign that encourages people to help slow climate change by reducing their meat consumption.
And this Beatle means business. He has signed up all of his famous pals like daughter Stella McCartney, Kelly Osbourne, Moby, Alec Baldwin, Kevin Spacey, Coldplay’s Chris Martin, and Sheryl Crow.
How does it work? Food production is responsible for 20 to 30 percent of global green house gas emissions. Paul says that by doing something as simple as consuming less meat you are addressing many issues from pollution, better health, the ethical treatment of animals, and global hunger.
The campaign is trying to spread the facts about meat consumption, which has quadrupled since 1961, and poultry consumption has increased 10-fold. The UN has even supported figures saying that meat production is one of the top contributors to the most serous environmental problems.
Want to get involved? “It’s kind of easy to do,” says Paul, “You’ve had too much over the weekend anyway and you’re all running down to the gym to try and work it off – so just have a meat-free Monday.” Why not try going meatless for a bit?
Tell us what you think of Paul McCartney’s herbivore efforts. Do you think people are capable of cutting back on meat consumption? Or do we love our hamburgers and chicken nuggets too much? Comment below!
