Mia Farrow will give up food for peace

The award winning actress and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Mia Farrow is going to show her support for the people of war-torn Darfur by going on a three-week long hunger strike. Mia is a long time supporter of the genocide cause and even has a website dedicated to raising awareness and getting people actively involved.

She told People Magazine that her motivation “came out of desperation, realizing that so many people faced starvation in Darfur. I thought what will it take, what is there left to do after all these years? I don't want to sound presumptuous or even assume that anyone will care at all, but facing the grimmest of realities, I just don't see how I can join the multitudes and watch a million people die.”

Mia has been to the region 11 times and with all on concrete action she has done, she felt it was not getting enough attention. Her efforts, while not directly affecting change, are symbolic of the deaths from starvation, thirst, and disease. And it seems things may be only getting worse for people in the region now that the country has expelled the humanitarian aid workers from the country.

“We are looking at a genocide that could dwarf the Rwandan genocide and no one is saying anything,” Mia told People, “If one old actress goes on a hunger strike, maybe we can do something.”

She wants you to help put pressure on our government to make the crisis in Darfur a top priority. How? Well you can start by learning more about the situation. Then take action by calling 1-800-GENOCIDE and speak your mind. You can also start a letter writing campaign to get genocide info into schools.

What do you think about Mia’s tactics? Do you think she will channel Gandhi’s non-violent protesting methods successfully? Or do think that people just won't care? Comment below!
