Music track choices at the Democratic Convention have included Stevie Wonder—a DNC favorite, Lenny Kravitz, and Survivor. But what if they got a multi-million and multi-platinum selling DJ to spin the songs as speakers get on and off the podium?
“I don’t think it would be a good idea if they chose me. I’d play Public Enemy and Clash songs,” says Moby.
Moby was in Denver to play a rare acoustic set Tuesday night at the Jet Hotel, at the Generation Action party, sponsored by Do Something and Glassbooth to celebrate young political activists.
“I love that someone from my generation is going to be president. John McCain’s politics come from fifty years ago. Fifty years ago the world was a different place.”
The excitement surrounding Obama’s candidacy is testament to how plugged in he is with the world now, says Moby.
The bar was buzzing inside the Jet Hotel and outside Denver’s streets looked like the University of Florida after a football game. There were as many people outside trying to get into the party as VIPS inside who had managed to cross the velvet rope. Celebs like Chevy Chase, CSI's Jorja Fox, and the Daily Show's John Oliver mingled with the room full of Democratic hotties.
At one point Moby’s singer, the beautiful and soulful Laura Dawn of MoveOn.org who’s toured with him, called for people to turn off their Blackberries, quit networking (the obligatory DNC activity), and listen to music. She spread the message by walking around the bar, microphone in hand, and asking people what they were talking about. The audience quieted down, for a little while.
Earlier in the set someone yelled out the obligatory request, “Play Free Bird!” And Moby, guitar in hand, complied, telling the audience afterwards, “I have a rule, when someone requests Free Bird, I play it.”
Stay tuned for more CGG coverage of the DNC!
