Nicole Kidman fights for gender equality in Haiti

UNIFEM Goodwill Ambassador Nicole Kidman fought for gender equality in a recent trip to Haiti. The Australian actress is bringing attention to gender-based violence, and supports long-term plans that advance women’s livelihood in the disaster-stricken nation.
Nicole and UNIFEM Executive Director Inés Alberdi met with survivors of violence with organizations working to support women’s needs in recovery efforts after the devastating earthquake. UNIFEM is the women's fund at the United Nations, which is dedicated to improving women’s rights and achieving gender equality. It provides financial and technical aid to innovative programs and strategies that foster women's empowerment.
“During this trip I saw first-hand how this humanitarian disaster is impacting women and girls. The lack of shelter and security makes them more vulnerable to violence, in particular sexual violence,” Nicole said. “Yet, I have also seen the determination and resilience of women and men in Haiti to rebuild their country…”
Remember, you don’t have to be a celebrity to make a difference. You can be a humanitarian just like Nicole. First familiarize yourself with some background on discrimination against women and facts about women all around the world. Then organize a rally for women’s rights in Haiti. You never know, you be appointed the next Goodwill Ambassador.
