PETA, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, just named Oprah its 2008 Person of the Year. It's no secret that Oprah is a huge philanthropist. (Just check out her #2 spot on the DoSomething.org's 2008 DoScores!)Or in Oprah’s case, phil-animalist.

Oprah used her talk show to reveal the conditions behind puppy mills and factory farms. Puppy mills are large scale breeding facilities that supply pet store with puppies. The episode included an undercover footage of puppy mills in Pennsylvania, “which showed 30 to 40 dogs in wire-bottomed rabbit cages that were stacked to the ceiling in a room that reeked of urine and feces, ” PETA reports. They also revealed conditions on a pig farm, where female hogs spend entire lives inside a single stall, and are used for breeding until they can no longer reproduce. Then…It’s the slaughterhouse. She even dedicated the show to her dog Sophie. Check it out below.

Oprah also embarked on a 21 days vegan diet. Vegan diets conserve energy, save the animals and are also great for your skin. Oprah has recently announced his frustration at gaining weight. Perhaps another vegan stint is in her future?

Congratulations, once again, Oprah!
