This ex-Beatle is looking out for the pups! Sir Paul McCartney has called on European Parliament to implement a ban on seal products. He is helping the Humane Society and Respect for Animals petition the cruel and inhumane seal hunting tactics that Canadian hunters use against these creatures.
Paul has been a vegetarian for over 30 years and he’s taking a stand on cruelty to animals He visited the harp seal nursery off Canada’s east coast in 2006 where he witnessed first hand the affected seals that had been brutally beaten for their meat and skin.
European Parliament is expected to pass a resolution calling for a limited ban on seal products from Canada, to protest the annual seal hunt off Canada's Atlantic coast, which EU legislators find cruel and inhumane. Over the next few weeks we will see how negotiations go.
Paul is one celeb really helping to stop the hunt and his message is simple: “The fate of millions of seal pups is in the hands of elected members of the European Parliament. In the next few weeks they will have a historic opportunity to stop the cruel trade in seal products throughout the European Union.”
According to the Humane Society seal hunting off the east coast of Canada in 2009 alone took 280,000 seal’s lives. That quota makes this year’s seal hunting the largest slaughter of marine mammals on Earth. Does the seal cause seem too overwhelming to do anything about? Paul doesn’t think so—you can follow his lead and sign a petition! Remember, April is the ASPCA’s Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month. It’s never too late to do something.
Do you think the U.S. will follow their lead? If you think the U.S. should take a part in this fight for the ethical treatment of animals you can write to your government and urge them to pass legislature for the seals! Tell us what you think and comment below!
