Pete Wentz proud to wed in gay-friendly Cali

“I am happy to get married [to Ashlee Simpson on Saturday] in the same state where the state supreme court recognizes the union of gay/lesbian couples,” newlywed Pete Wentz told the Advocate following Ellen and Portia’s recent engagement. “It seems like we could have a hell of a bash as a joint anniversary over in West Hollywood next year!”

The Fallout Boy joined a group of famous gay-rights supporters who also celebrated last week’s historic (and controversial) overturning of California’s ban against gay marriage by the state’s Supreme Court. The decision came after Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger twice vetoed a bill that was passed in California’s legislature. However, Arnold quickly accepted the Supreme Court’s ruling, publicly stating that he would not only uphold the opinion, but that he would come out in opposition to any attempts to strike it down.

Unsurprisingly, gay Hollywood is very vocal about the victory.

“You can't outlaw love,” ‘Nsync star Lance Bass told Advocate, adding that he’s thrilled that California “has chosen to join the state of Massachusetts in setting a historical precedent in its demonstration that all loving relationships deserve the same level of respect and recognition under the law, regardless of the gender of those involved.”

New Yorker Cynthia Nixon (a.k.a. Miranda from Sex and the City), said: “This is a very happy day for California. I know people there have been fighting a long battle for the legalization of same-sex marriage. Americans everywhere should feel proud of this important advance in civil rights.”

Much ado was made when Grey’s Anatomy star T.R. Knight (a.k.a. Dr. George O’Malley) was outted by his former costar Isaiah “Dr. Preston Burke” Washington. These days, though, T.R. is a very public gay rights activist. “Our ‘certain inalienable rights’ are protected today. It makes me proud to live in a country that works to correct its sins.”

The ruling is particularly affecting for rocker Melissa Etheridge, who has been calling actress Tammy Michaels her wife (even thanking Tammy as such during her Oscars acceptance speech), since 2004. “They have made an honest woman of me!” she said shortly after the ruling. “What a wonderful blessing for us and the gay community. We’re moving forward. It makes me feel happy for the whole human race that we are finally getting out of our differences and coming together.

“I get all choked up about this because I think that the part that people who don’t really understand this issue don’t realize is that we are people with jobs and families,” she continued. “We have kids. And there have been years and years of explaining to them. I remember when it was on Schwarzenegger's desk and we were like “Oh, if he signs it, we may be able to get married.” And then he vetoed it, and we were like, "Oh, mean governor!" So they have gone through this with us, and I can’t wait to pick them up from school today and say, ‘Hey, your parents are just as married as anybody else's’.”

Designer Marc Jacobs was short but very to the point in his comment: “Who to love and how to love should be up to the individual or the couple. Enough said!”
