Sharon Stone has been caught with her foot shoved down her throat during a red carpet interview last Thursday in Cannes. The A-list actress was once a welcome guest to Asia. In fact, Stone was last year's guest at the Shanghai International film festival, but now she faces a box-office ban in China.
Stone's big boo-boo: hypothesizing a link between the earthquake in China, which has killed over 65,000 people, and China's treatment of Tibetans.
"I'm not happy about the way the Chinese are treating the Tibetans because I don't think anyone should be unkind to anyone else," Stone told Cable Entertainment News of Hong Kong. "And then this earthquake and all this stuff happened, and then I thought, is that karma? When you're not nice that the bad things happen to you?"
Well, how's this for karma: Sharon has become persona non grata in Chinese media circles. The founder of one of China's biggest urban cinema chains called her comments "inappropriate" and said his company would boycott her films, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Ng See-Yuen, chairman of the Federation of Hong Kong Filmmakers, said that actors "should not bring personal politics to comments about a natural disaster that has left five million Chinese homeless."
