Actress Rosario Dawson and rocker Joel Madden may not be known for their writing, but the two took a crack at journalism this month. They have both written articles about their favorite causes and organizations for the latest issue of Los Angeles Confidential magazine.
Rosario is a long time supporter of women’s rights and is a board member of V-Day along with other stars like Salma Hayek. V-Day is a non-profit devoted to ending violence against women worldwide. In her article, Rosario focuses on V-Days 2009 spotlight—the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
She wrote an eloquent piece about the soldiers in the DRC working to destroy and take over communities in order to obtain rich natural resources. Rosario believes we need to pressure our electronic companies into buying only ‘conflict free’ products so that they do not continue to fund the war and the violence against women going on.
Joel’s piece is about his own foundation, the Richie Madden Children’s Foundation he started with his lady Nicole Richie. The superstar couple has given back to children in neighborhoods here in America as well as villages in Africa. They have even worked to support an orphanage in Russia.
Want to spread the word like Rosario and Joel? You can write articles just like them for your school or local newspaper. You can even write and produce a play about a cause you care about! Who knows, you might end up starting your very own awareness campaign!
