This Sunday, celebrities and the rest of us regular peeps honored the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. In cities across the world tides of people dressed head to toe in rainbows and migrated to the local pride parades and other festivities. Pride marches have taken place on an annual basis since the 70s and New York remains the city with the biggest celebration.
Some celebs came out (no pun intended) and beat the heat to celebrate this weekend like the “Real Housewife of New Jersey” Danielle Staub who walked down Fifth Avenue with the other New Yorkers. The parade was led by celebrity Grand Marshals including Milk creator Dustin Lance Black, Cleve Jones, Anne Kronenberg, and Governor Paterson.
New Yorkers marching in the parade even had gay pride falling from the skies…well not exactly but Armani Exchange is running gay pride billboards featuring model Kerry Degman. The posters are displayed throughout the city in support of National Gay Pride Month.
NYC’s celeb mockery du jour, “Celebrity Autobiography,” hosted a “Gay Pride Edition” on Friday. “Celebrity Autobiography” is a weekly show that brings celebrities on the stage to read from excerpts of other A-list autobiographies. This week, Broadway sensation Cheyenne Jackson, “Ugly Betty” star Michael Urie, "SNL" and "30 Rock" funny girl Rachel Dratch, Kristen Johnson and others performed sections of autobiographies by famous LGBTQs and gay icons like Madonna, Diana Ross, Miley Cyrus, and Pam Anderson.
Even though this weekend would convince you that NY has enough LGBTQ pride, they have still not legalized gay marriage. Since Prop 8 banned gay marriage in California, only six states have legalized same-sex marriage: Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont, Maine, and New Hampshire.
Want to do something about it? Keep up to date about gay marriage issues—sign petitions for same-sex marriage or right to your state senator or representative. Join or start an LGBTQ/Straight Alliance at your school. And celebrate important LGBTQ occasions like Gay Pride Month (June), National Coming Out Day (October 11th) and The Day of Silence (April 17th). Tell us what you think—comment below!
