The “Gay Marriage Storm” sparks controversy

Governor David Paterson of New York introduced gay marriage legislation last Thursday. And while gay rights advocates are beaming with excitement over the recent victories, others are not so keen.

And Stephen Colbert is one of them! But it’s not because of his faith or his conservative views. It’s because "New York can't handle a flood of gay marriage. As it is it's impossible to get a wedding announcement in the Times."

Governor Paterson says that the legislation would give same-sex couples 1,300 to 1,400 rights that don't exist unless a couple is married, so the debate is over more than just New York Times wedding announcements. The real motivation for Colbert’s ad was in response to a National Organization for Marriage PSA that spoke about a “gay storm” coming to wipe out their traditional Christian values.

The “gay storm” they refer to is the recent rush of victories of same-sex marriage legislation in Vermont, Iowa, and New Hampshire, joining Massachusetts and Connecticut. Despite the huge set-back for gay rights advocates with the passage of Proposition 8 in California last year, there has been major progress both at home and abroad. Same-sex marriage is now legal in six countries and five US states.
