The cast of "Hair" is bringing their flower power to the streets! Last week, the groovy musical announced that the show will be canceled on Sunday, October 11th so that the cast can join the National Equality March that day in Washington in support of gay-marriage rights.

Talk about practicing what you preach: “peace, flowers, freedom, happiness!” The October 11th event marks the anniversary of a gay rights march held in 1979. The cast announced the news on July 13th during a rally in Los Angeles. They were there to perform on “The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien” but they took a detour to hit the streets and join an equality rally alongside T.R. Knight and Dustin Lance Black lead by Cleve Jones.

The Tony Award winning musical is all about equality and understanding so it has become a rally cry for the LGBTQ rights movement. The show tells the tale of a group of young hippies in the 60s coming into their own through political activism. So yes, the musical was originally enjoyed by your parents, but it’s message resonates with today’s youth.

While it may seem like we’ve come a long way since those days, we are still struggling with a lot of the same things. We may have gotten rid of the draft, but we still deal with issues like racism, sexism, and homophobia. If you want to do something about it, join the cast on October 11th. If you can’t make it to the march, you can still celebrate National Coming Out Day, which is on the same day.
